Remove solid contaminants from liquid process streams:

The Winston/Royal Guard Type 61V Vertical and Type 61H Horizontal Liquid Filters remove solid contaminants from liquid process streams in refining, petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, and other industries.  As industrial liquid process filtration requirements vary, a large selection of filter cartridges are available to meet the specific application.  Cartridge selections include many types, sizes, materials, end treatments, particle size retentions, and efficiency ratings.

Solids removal applications for Winston/Royal Guard liquid filters can be found in upstream injection well water to downstream processes, including hydrocarbon liquids, acids, process water, glycols, amines, and many other process liquids and finished products.

Vertical or Horizontal filtration unit:

While a vertical filter vessel is typically provided for most industrial liquid filtration applications, a horizontal vessel may better suit some installations.  High flow filtration units may contain filter cartridges up to 80-1/2” long.  Utilizing a horizontal configuration may prove more practical when removing spent filter cartridges and installing new ones.  The type 61H horizontal filter can fill this need.

Consider the smallest particle size to remove:

When planning your liquid filter application, attention should be given to the smallest solid particle you wish to remove from the liquid flow.  The smaller the particle, the smaller the openings in the filter cartridge must be.  This can affect the flow rate and pressure drop which must be factored into the design of the filtration unit.  This will include determining the quantity, length, and type of liquid filter cartridges to be used, as well as the length and diameter of the filter vessel.  Therefore, if your liquid filtration project requires particulate removal of 25 microns, there may well be a disadvantage in selecting a 1 micron filter cartridge when considering horsepower requirements, capital outlay, and maintenance.

Engineering for demanding applications:

Many factors must be considered when designing the filtration unit, including the process liquid, viscosity, flow rate, operating and design pressure and temperature, desired solids retention, material compatibility, cartridge longevity, etc.  Please use our website Gas or Liquid Filter Inquiry Questionnaire to get your application started.

The professionals at Winston/Royal Guard can design your filtration unit around the right filter cartridge for your application, whether it’s a high flow filter, string wound, stainless steel, activated carbon, or another of our extensive cartridge line-up.

Protecting a Liquid-Liquid Coalescer:

When solids loading is expected, the Type 61 Liquid Filter is an excellent choice for installation immediately upstream of a liquid-liquid coalescer such as our Type 62-CC or 62-MM.  The highly efficient Type 61 Liquid Filter should be installed here to remove solid particulates which might otherwise lead to fouling of the coalescing cartridges and thus help to maintain peak efficiency of the coalescing unit and extend the time between cartridge change-outs.

Protecting an Activated Carbon Filter:

In the case of the Type 61V-C Activated Carbon Filter, the unit should be protected upstream with reliable particulate filtration to prevent solid contamination from entering the carbon bed and congesting the open pores in the carbon granules. It is also important to provide particulate filtration downstream of the carbon filter to remove any carbon fines that may carry over. For both installations the Type 61 Liquid Filter is recommended.

Duplex liquid filtration system:

For continuous operation during filter cartridge change-outs when downtime is not an option, a duplex, or dual configuration can be the solution.  Typically, two Type 61 Liquid Filters are mounted on a common steel base and equipped with heavy duty valves for switching between the active and idle filtration units.  When requested, customer specified valves can be furnished with the system.

Options include:
  • Back-flush styles.
  • Lifting eye(s).
  • Quick-opening closure providing easier access for cartridge change-outs.
  • Dual skid-mounted with valves and piping for ease of installation.
  • Other customer requirements.
Complete selection of liquid filter cartridges:

Filter Cartridges are available in a variety of types and styles so as to meet stringent application requirements for liquid process filtration. Some examples of filter types are:

  • WCC series wound fiber depth style liquid filter cartridges available with media in cotton, fiberglass, nylon, acrylic/orlon, polyester, polypropylene and Rayon. Particle retention sizes are 0.5, 1, 3, 5, 15, 20, 25, 30, and up to 200 microns.
  • WLP-L pleated series liquid filter cartridges provide the maximum surface area for trapping large amounts of contaminants with the added benefit of longer service life between change-outs.  For a wide range of chemical compatibilities, these cartridges are available in polypropylene, polyester, and microglass with a selection of end treatment materials and designs.  Micron ratings are from 1 to 70 with efficiencies to 99.98%.
  • WLST pleated stainless steel series liquid filter cartridges with stainless steel wire mesh construction, are designed to perform in applications outside the range of other filter medias.  For removal of solid contaminants in industrial filtration applications with harsh, corrosive and/or high temperature liquids.  The pleated design offers the maximum surface area for higher flow rates and longer operation time.  Absolute rated efficiencies from 5 to 840 microns.
  • WHFP high flow pleated series liquid filter cartridges for vertical and horizontal installations provide maximum surface area for higher liquid flow requirements.  These cartridges are typically 6" diameter and feature handles for easy removal, O-rings for positive sealing, and are available in pleated polypropylene, polyester, microglass, and other materials.  Particle retention (micron size): 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 70.
